As we begin to understand the realities of remote work and learning, it is essential to remember that taking time outside is more relevant than ever. This being said, the seriousness of sun safety and UV protection is imperative even in the middle of a pandemic. Ultraviolet (UV rays) is from the sun, and other sources like tanning beds and too much exposure can cause sunburn, eye damage, and premature wrinkles. Luckily, Teen Graffiti has compiled an essential list for sun safety and the best practices to promote UV safety.

Tips to Stay Sun-Safe
-Try to remain in the shade: Even when you spend time outside, try to reduce the amount of direct exposure that you have with the sun.
-Limit the Amount of Time in the Sun: Pay attention to how much time you spend in the sun and the times you choose to be in the sun. From 10 am to 4 pm, UV rays are the strongest, and sun rays are especially intense. To pay attention to when sun rays are especially at their strongest, practice the shadow rule. If your shadow is shorter than you, that means that the sun’s rays are at their strongest. This means that you should find shade asap.
-Try to Cover Up: When you choose to go out, wear lightweight clothing that covers your skin as much as possible. As a reference, dark clothing blocks the sun more than light. For additional protection look for made with sun-protective materials
-Wear Accessories that protect your facial features: Consider wearing a hat or pair of sunglasses while you are outside. This will further protect your face, ears, and neck from the sun. When investing in sunglasses, make sure the lenses have a 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide the utmost protection for your eyes and surrounding skin.
-Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen: Make sure to apply SPF of at least 30 on your skin and try to reapply at least every 2 hours. When purchasing, look for a sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA radiation. Also, remember to reapply after swimming or sweating as well. Another great tip to keep in mind is using a lip balm that contains sunscreen is also a great additional band of protection.
