Goal Setting

By: Evetta McGriff
Goal-setting is to decide to put a plan in place that motivates you to turn your ideas and visions into reality. Setting goals can improve your future. Motivational speaker Tony Robbins said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” People set different types of goals, but the purpose of setting goals is to improve on something. When preparing to set goals, it’s important for the goal to be for you and not for someone else. It won’t have as much meaning if it isn’t something you want.

When is a good time to set a goal? Anytime is a good time! Many people set goals at the beginning of the year and call them New Year’s resolutions. Students set goals at the beginning of the school year, to achieve success during the year. Individuals set weight goals and even financial goals. It’s important for the goals to have some meaning to you, and something that you can reach or work towards. A goal shouldn’t be so easy that you reach it overnight. Goals should require some effort. Businessman Robert Herjavec said, “A goal without a timeline is just a dream.”

You should set short-term goals, goals that you can meet in the very near future. This type of goal could be making a certain grade on a test or report card. You should also set long-term goals, which take a little longer. This type of goal could be graduating from college, or having a certain career. Whatever type of goal you set, it should be S.M.A.R.T. A goal should be specific and you should write out what you plan to do. It should also be measureable. You have to be able to track your progress. You should not have a goal set so high that it is not achievable or realistic. Set a challenging goal, but not one that you have no way of reaching. You know what you can do; push yourself to aim high. Make sure the goal is timely. You need time to complete the goal, but you have to set a deadline.

Successful people set goals. Unsuccessful people talk about what they would like to do, but they don’t put any action behind their words. “The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.”-Poet, writer, and author Bill Copeland
