Nurture a Lasting Love for Reading

By Evetta McGriff
Reading is something you will do for the rest of your life. It is a part of everything we do. Parents read to their children when they are young. In school, teachers read to their students. Kids are encouraged to go to the library and check out books, or download books on their tablets or other electronic devices.

For some of us, learning to read may have been difficult, and you may continue to struggle, which is what makes some people not like to read. When students have a hard time with reading, it is usually their least favorite thing to do at school. However, if you learned to read at an early age, and can read very well, it is more than likely your favorite subject.

The best part of reading is you don’t forget how to do it and there are so many things to read. Most people read longer when they read about something they enjoy, and if you can relate to what you are reading. You can find excitement in reading about your hobbies, places to go, colleges to attend, and even popular cars or fashion trends. Remember, you are reading just for fun; there won’t be a test to take when you finish.

Find a good place to read. Many people like quiet places where they can get lost in whatever they’re reading. You might like to read outside with soft music playing, or sitting in your favorite chair in your room in total silence. The importance is not on what you are reading, but your enjoyment of what you are reading. You might have a favorite author, like graphic novels, or want to know more about being a chef and cooking your favorite foods. You might like to read on a tablet, your phone, or hard copy books or magazines. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy reading. Some people might even like to be a part of a group of readers. If that describes you, join a book club or create your own to discuss a favorite book. Some books are adapted into movies. It’s fun to read the book and then watch the movie to compare the two versions. There are those who love books, but don’t have time to actually sit down and read them. Audio books are a great way to still get involved in a good book, but they allow you to do other things if you need to. They are a great way to pass the time if you are a passenger on a long trip, or if you like to exercise.

How do you nurture a lasting love for reading? Just keep reading, whatever way you like.
