Standardized tests like the ACT/SAT are measurement tools colleges use to determine a student’s potential for success at a given college or university. While the test doesn’t provide a complete picture of a student’s academic abilities, it’s part of the college entrance packet. The weight of entrance exams adds pressure on students to obtain high scores. To reduce the stress of taking the exams, below are some test taking tips.
1. Breathe and relax – Keep your mind and attitude free of distractions and negative thinking. Remember that you prepared for the test are ready to execute. Although this is step one, you will need it throughout the test.
2. Read carefully – To fully understand what’s needed, you must read all of the instruction. This will save you time later because you know the expectation of the question. Also, you’re able to formulate a plan of action for answering the questions.
3. Select the best answer possible – You may not always know the answer. Don’t fret. Eliminate the answers you know are wrong. Trust yourself to choose from the remaining possibilities.
4. Budget your time – The test is timed so ensure that you allow ample time to complete the exam and review your answers. As each section has a designated time, review the time before you begin the section.
5. Answer the easy questions first – Quickly go through the test and complete the questions for which you know the answers. This process allows you to take more time on the harder ones. If you’re not confident in any section, remember to breathe, eliminate the ones you know are wrong, and take your best guess.
6. Practice, Practice, Practice – Whether taking the ACT or SAT, each test has a practice booklet. Visit your local library if you’re unsure of where to obtain a copy.
7. Come prepared – Bring multiple pencils and a watch. It’s better to have more than enough. Even if you’re taking a computerized test, having pencils allow for preparation if the facility loves power. Also, they’re helpful in solving math problems. As for your watch, it helps you track your time as you progress through the test.
8. Get a good night’s sleep – Rest is essential preparation before the exam. Through sleep, the body and mind rejuvenate and provide you with the energy for the next day’s task.
9. Stay calm and eat a hearty breakfast – As mentioned throughout the tips, breathing and relaxation calms the mind and the nerves. Eating breakfast allows your mind and body to remain alert instead of concentrating on hunger pains.
These tips help you prepare for your test. With all of the steps, it’s important to trust yourself and believe that you’ve done the necessary work to excel.
