Internships provide real work experience while you are still trying to decide what you are interested in, as well as developing your skills and abilities. When you have the opportunity to intern, you are able to watch others in a particular field and learn from them. You also gain confidence in your own abilities. It may also provide you with college credit or a certification.
Because many jobs require experience and the job market is so competitive, participating in an internship gives you that needed experience and possibly a step ahead of those without internships.
