Whether it’s for a school assignment, college admissions application or a standardized test, being able to express yourself through written words is extremely important. One of the key ways to do this is through an essay. Essays give the reader an opportunity to understand your perspective on a subject and how you structure your thoughts to support that belief. They can cover a range of subjects. Often the most challenging part about the process is not determining the topic, but figuring out how to convey your thoughts clearly and succinctly. If you struggle with where to get started, here are some helpful tips to consider.

A basic essay will fit into one of four categories: descriptive (paint a picture), persuasive (convince or persuade), expository (present facts) or narrative (tell a story). It will also consist of three major parts: an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Once you’ve decided upon your topic, start by outlining the major points that you will cover.
